Join the Ferndale school counselors for Wednesday Wellness lesson, which focuses on another healthy habit - sleep. Sleep is important for a number of reasons. Sleep keeps our brain healthy, helps us manage our memories, keeps our energy up, and so much more. Wow! It is important for us to get enough sleep. Luckily, our school counselors help us explore ways to get a good night's rest. We go over keeping a sleep routine, putting down/turning off electronics, and more. We read the book, Spookly: The Square Pumpkin, to learn that even when there are differences between others, it is important to treat others with kindness.

It sure has been rainy this week! I want to say that it was amazing to see everyone spirit outfits (it was Custer colors) at school. Last week, we learned about resolutions and how they are a great way to set goals. This week, we join the elementary school counselors to discuss habits. Habits are behaviors that we learn or do. An example of a habit is drinking enough water each day or moving our bodies. We then learn about some healthy habits you can practice to become your best self! We identified that drinking enough water, moving our bodies, going outside, and taking care of our bodies (hygiene) are healthy habits to always practice! For our last lesson before the break, we discuss positive self-talk. Self-talk is the inner voice that goes on inside our heads throughout our waking hours. Positive self-talk is when we talk to ourselves in a reassuring, kind, and more optimistic way. Positive self-talk can have a big impact on how we think and feel. Over time, engaging in more positive self-talk can help reduce stress, improve self-esteem, increase motivation, inspire productivity, and improve overall mental and physical health.

We transition from bulllying prevention to learning about how to tame our anger. We focus on how our brain can react to anger and how to bring ourselves back to a neutral mindset. Our older students were introduced to the abcde method to help unflip our lids! While our younger students listened to a story that focused on breathing and sitting with our anger to make it seem less controlling. Hello Custer Cougar Community,
I hope that everyone has had the opportunity to enjoy some cocoa, tea, apple cider, and other warm drinks during this cold time. Here is an update on our Wednesday Wellness lessons for the month of November. This month, we are focusing on bullying awareness and prevention. Each week, our students expand their knowledge on how to recognize, report, and refuse bullying. Week 1: Say "no" to bullying. Our student learn how to recognize and say no to bullying. Week 2: Celebrating differences. We learn that our differences make us special and that kindness is important. Week 3: Hands are for helping. We learn what to do about bullying (refuse and report) and continue to focus on kindness. Week 4: What you say matters. This week, we focus on how our words affect others in positive - and negative - ways. Week 5: What is cyberbullying. Last, we introduce cyberbullying. We learn how it differs and what to do about it.
